FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the No. 15 ranked Cortland Red Dragons on Wednesday. All three goals were scored in the first half of the game.
Chance LaCroix scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils, and
Thomas McDonald made six saves.
To open the scoring, Cortland's Owen Brant fired a ball from the right side towards the middle of the field, and Sam LaMendola was able to flick a looping shot over the head of McDonald to make it 1-0.
The Red Dragons wasted little time adding a second goal, scoring in the 25th minute when Shay Daly curled a corner kick into the top right corner of the net.
Just seconds later, Fredonia State was able to cut the Cortland lead in half on an unconventional goal. After a Blue Devil foul gave the Dragons a free kick near midfield, there was confusion over who would take the free kick for Cortland. The ball was ruled in play by the referee, and LaCroix stole the ball and dribbled in alone on goal to score.
The Devils fall to 2-4 in the SUNYAC and 5-6-3 overall. The Dragons are now 4-0-2 and 9-1-4 overall.
Next up for the Devils is a trip to Potsdam on Saturday.
