Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Devils hang on for win over Canton

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team held on for a home SUNYAC victory in an 85-83 win over Canton on Friday. The game was about as even as could be, with neither team leading by more than five points the entire second half. Five different Blue Devils scored in double digits, led by Brian Kopp and Stevie Williams with 16 points and both dishing out four assists. Martin Garza added 15 and Ethan Sokolowski had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Dexter Brooks chipped in 13 points.

The biggest lead of the game came early on. Garza nailed his first of three three-pointers to give the Devils a 10-3 lead.

Canton would later take an 18-16 lead. After three more lead changes, the Roos would settle for a 42-38 edge at the break.

Late in the game, Kopp would convert his only two free throws of the game to make it a two-possession lead, 84-80, for Fredonia State. Canton's Bryon Streb would nail a three with 11 seconds to go to make it a one-point game. The Devils would hang on for the win, with Canton's last-second desperation shot bouncing off the rim.

Canton outrebounded the Devils 35-26. The Devils had the hot hand from deep, connecting on 9-17 threes (53 percent), while Canton was 7-23 (30 percent).

The Roos (3-13 / 2-7 SUNYAC) were led by Lateef Johnson, Jr. with 36 points and 19 rebounds, and Jordan DSidle had 10 points.

The Devils (2-13 / 2-6 SUNYAC) take on Oswego on Saturday afternoon. They are scheduled for a 4 p.m. tipoff and will follow the women's game.
