Fast start powers Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team shot out to a 15-0 lead before finishing off the visiting Buffalo State Bengals, 78-52, on Thursday evening. The win earned the Blue Devil athletic department points in the Lake Erie Cup as well as improving the women's record to 2-2 in the SUNYAC and 7-4 overall.

A quartet of Devils scored in double digits, led by Payton Gilbert with 19 points, while grabbing eight boards. Jakiera Stackhouse turned in a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Grace Alexander scored 14 points and had five steals. Jayssa Snelick went for 14 points and seven rebounds. 

By the end of the first quarter, the Devils were up 19-4, with Gilbert accounting for nine of those points. They held the Bengals to just 2-12 shooting from the floor. By the half, it was 37-18.

The third quarter proved the best offensively for Fredonia State as they poured in 29 points, with Stackhouse leading the way with six points as eight different players figured in the scoring. 

The Devils would extend the lead to 35 points late in the fourth when they went up 74-39 with 3:42 left to play. 

Fredonia State had a season-high 57 rebounds, led by Aliyah Hopkins with 15.

Buffalo State (1-3 SUNYAC/2-9 overall) was led by Amya Moore with 10 points and nine rebounds. They were held to 1-19 shooting from the three-point range, and shot 29 percent overall. The Devil defense also caused 20 turnovers.

The Devils head to Morrisville on Tuesday for a women's/men's SUNYAC contest.
