NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- For the second night in a row, the Fredonia State women's basketball team got off to a hot start, only to come up short in the end. After leading 13-2 early on, the Devils would fall to SUNYAC-leading New Paltz, 57-53.
The Hawks improve to 14-1 in the conference and 20-2 overall. The Devils are now 6-7 in conference play and 11-9 overall.
For the Devils,
Jakeira Stackhouse had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Payton Gilbert had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and
Grace Alexander added 15 points.
New Paltz would not take a lead in the game until 2:24 left in the first half. Kayden Cornell nailed a three to make it 25-24 in favor of the Hawks. The Devils would score the next five points capped by a Stackhouse three to take a 29-24 ead into the intermission.
New Paltz would take a 43-36 lead after three quarters.
Fredonia State would twice tie the game in the fourth, the second tie coming when Gilbert made a layup with 2:07 left to knot things at 53. New Paltz's Brianna Fitzgerald would score the game's final three points to seal the game for the Hawks.
Fitzgerald finished a busy afternoon with 22 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, and five steals.
The Devils are back home next weekend, playing host to Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
