AUBURNDALE,Fla. -- Fredonia State baseball dropped a pair of games Saturday in Florida, falling 5-4 to Penn State Altoona before suffering a 17-1 setback against Calvin.
Game One vs. Penn State Altoona:
In the opener, Fredonia State grabbed the first run of the game in the second inning when
Andrew Tucker connected on a solo home run to left.
The Devils added another run in the fifth after
Nick Vitelli singled and later came home on a Tucker RBI double to leftfield, trimming their deficit to 3-2. Fredonia State tied the game in the sixth thanks to a
Zachary Richards' RBI single through the right side. In the eighth, Panek doubled down the left-field line and scored off of a
Tucker Schwab's RBI single to give Fredonia a 4-3 lead. Altoona answered in the bottom of the ninth when Kaleb Jockel drew a lead off walk and Judd Dasso ended the game with a two-run homer to left.
At the plate, Fredonia finished with 12 hits. Panek went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Tucker was 2 for 4 with a homer, double, and two RBIs, and Richards added two hits and two RBIs.
Morgan Zientara got the start for the Devils, allowing three earned runs over five innings while striking out six.
Jonah Church took the loss in relief and is now 1-1 after giving up two runs over 3.1 innings. For Penn State Altoona, Michael Tedrick earned the win in relief to improve to 3-0 after allowing one run in four innings of work.
Game Two vs. Calvin:
In game two against Calvin, the Knights scored early and often, but Fredonia broke through in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.
Vito Verni drove in a RBI single for the Devils lone run.
Fredonia State had three hits in game two, with
Logan Gray's hitting a double, Domenic Hickock's single, and Verni's RBI single accounting for the offense. Calvin's pitcher Ben Hoekstra earned the win to move to 1-1 after tossing five scoreless innings.
The Devils move to 1-5 overall and will look to bounce back next when they face Rutgers-Newark at N.E. Regional Park #3 in Davenport, Fla. Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
