CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia State baseball split a SUNYAC doubleheader on the road at Canton, dropping the opener before erupting offensively in a dominant Game Two win.
Game One: Canton 10, Fredonia 1
Canton took control of the game early putting up five runs in the bottom of the first. AJ Campi singled to start the rally and later brought in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Jared Paone and Korbin Lovejoy each drove in a run after being hit by a pitch and drawing a walk, respectively, before Lance Phillips Jr. added an RBI single. Campi then capped the inning with another bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0.
The Roos added to their lead in the sixth when Sal Diaz broke the game open with a three-run home run to left, extending their lead to 8-1. They tacked on two more in the eighth on a two-RBI single from Mark Maybee Jr.
Fredonia State lone run came in the fifth inning. Domenic Hickock scored after
Ryan Mettler lined an RBI single up the middle.
Pitcher
Michael Byrns was tagged with the loss for the Devils while
Talfourd Wynne provided a strong relief effort, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings with five strikeout. Josh Martos and
Maddox Sheesley also saw action in game one.
Game Two: Fredonia 15, Canton 1
The Devils responded big in the second game, erupting for 15 runs. The scoring began in the second inning when Connor Tyree stole home to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Fredonia State broke the game open in the third inning when Josh Monti brought in a run with an RBI groundout, and
Ryan Mettler followed with an RBI single.
Logan Gray added a sacrifice fly, and
Vito Verni capped the rally with an RBI single as Fredonia scored five runs in the frame.
Fredonia State continued to pile on in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Monti, and in the fifth on RBI hits from Domenic Hickock and
Nick Vitelli. The biggest inning for the Devils came in the sixth, highlighted by Vitelli's bases-clearing three RBI single, part of a five-run surge that put the game out of reach. Gray also added another RBI single in the seventh to finish the scoring.
Vitelli had a monster second game leading the offense with four hits and four RBI. On the mound,
Nick Syposs kept Canton off balance all game, going seven innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out four. Canton's Ben Feil took the loss after surrendering six runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Fredonia State moves to 7-24 overall and 6-11 in SUNYAC play after the split.
