FREDONIA, N.Y. — Anna Ratchuk scored in the 16th minute and Carissa Shanahan made seven saves in her goalkeeping debut as Fredonia State earned a 1-0 victory over Utica on day one of the Blue Devil Classic Friday afternoon at University Stadium.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-1 on the season and recorded its second straight shutout.
Fredonia controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Pioneers 13-6 before intermission. The breakthrough came when Bronwyn Madden set up Ratchuk for her first goal of the season in the 16th minute.
Fredonia finished with an 18-17 edge in shots and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Blue Devils' defense protected the one-goal lead throughout the final stages to seal the victory.
The Devils return to action Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. home contest against Alfred University. In the earlier Classic game Friday, Oswego State defeated Alfred, 3-0.
