Roland, Baran named FSU AOTWs

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- This week's Fredonia State Male and Female Athletes of the Week are Talon Roland of the track and field team, and Mieley Baran of the women's lacrosse team. 

Baran led the Blue Devil offense to a 2-0 week and a 4-0 overall record. She had two goals and four assists in two games. She added five ground balls and three caused turnovers to her stat line. In a back-and-forth game as Westminster, she had one goal and three assists in a 9-7 win. She added a goal and an assist in a 7-4 win vs. Nazareth.

As an individual, Roland was sixth out of 39 runners in the 400m. He ran a personal best of 48.64s. The winning time was 47.50 by Geneseo's Jacob Miller. 

Roland, Jordan LockettCam Sample, and Aiden VanAmburg each ran a leg of the first place 4x200 relay team at the regional AARTFC Meet. The team ran a 1:28.92, which bested second place SUNY Delhi's 1:29.54. 

Other Notables:
- In addition to the relay team, Lockett finished fifth out of 20 sprinters in the men's 200m. He timed out in 22.01, just off the pace of the winning time of Rowan's Evan Corcoran at 21.72.
Jessica Kowalski helped lead Fredonia State to a 2-0 week and a 4-0 overall record while being named the SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week. She recorded 19 saves in two victories and produced a .63 save percentage. She had 14 saves in a 9-7 game against Westminster on Wednesday. In a 7-4 win over Nazareth on Saturday, she held the Flyers scoreless in the first and fourth quarters as the Devils mounted a comeback win.
- Nick Vitelli - For the baseball team this past week, Nick went 3-9 (.333), including a double.
- Emma Gassman - Competed in two events at the AARTFC Regional Meet for the women's track teams. She was 29th in the 400m in a time of 1:00.10 and placed 19th out of 39 in the women's 200m in a time of 25.80.

The baseball team and softball teams begin their annual Spring Trips on Saturday with two games apiece in sunny Florida.

Cam Sample will try to reach his goal of a national title when he competes in the long jump at the NCAA Meet this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama. He is currently ranked No. 2 in all of Division III. Look for a preview tomorrow!
